The Stala Chair

New York

2022

Inspired by geological and biomorphic formations, the Stala Chair explores functionality as it is inscribed onto the female body over time and considers how the body is both physically supported and visually framed.

Existing simultaneously as sculpture and usable furniture, the Stala Chair reflects the patriarchal valuation of women through utility—where function is inseparable from expectations of beauty and softness. Pointed wooden dowels echo stalagmite formations found in caves, while the cascading fabric along the leg mirrors the slow movement of water, intertwining solid and fluid, rigid and yielding. Through the tension between wood and textile, synthetic and organic material, the Stala Chair visualizes how deeply embedded ideals of femininity accumulate gradually, almost imperceptibly—naturalized to the point of invisibility. Like stalagmites that form through centuries of quiet accumulation, these structures mirror how deeply rooted expectations of submissive femininity are built slowly over time—layered, normalized, and hardened through repetition until they appear natural, inevitable, and immovable.
